New Report: Black Girls Have Been Let Down

Black girls treated harshly new report shows

On Friday the Delores Barr Weaver Policy Center released a hard hitting report, “Sounding the Alarm: Criminalization of Black Girls in Florida,” that reveals how Black girls are systemically more likely to be let down by the education and juvenile justice systems in our state. You can see WJXT’s coverage of the release here:

Among its salient points, the report makes clear that, “While the disparate discipline rates among girls are troubling, what’s equally disturbing is the lack of awareness of how historical trauma and racial bias impact our day-to-day interactions with girls of color. Black girls do not misbehave more than their White peers, but their behaviors are responded to much more harshly.” – Vicky Basra, President & CEO of the Delores Barr Weaver Policy Center
